Introduction to Colorectal Cancer and Delta-Tocotrienol

Colorectal cancer alone is the 3rd leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the US. Cancer usually starts in the colon or the rectum and accordingly are named as colon or rectal cancers. In the past, studies of different types of cancers, have demonstrated anticancer effects of Delta-Tocotrienol but the anticancer effects of Delta-Tocotrienol were not fully demonstrated in colorectal cancer as focused studies were not performed. In this study, the anti-proliferative effects of Delta-Tocotrienols were observed both in vivo and in vitro studies.
How does Delta-Tocotrienol fight Colorectal Cancer?
In this study, in vitro, the anti-proliferative effects of Tocotrienols in colon epithelial and stromal cells were investigated. And in vivo, the same effects were investigated in an induced colorectal cancer mouse model. All the isoforms of Tocotrienols were investigated for their ability to fight cancer, and it was observed that Delta-Tocotrienol exerted the most effective anti-proliferative properties on colon adenocarcinoma cells. It was also observed that Delta-Tocotrienol was able to reduce the nitrite and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) concentrations in mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) and it was also able to stimulate the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and interferon γ. It was also observed that Delta-Tocotrienol enriched diet incredibly suppressed the tumor formation and growth in dextran sulfate sodium and azoxymethane treated mice. The complete study suggested that at the molecular level, Delta-Tocotrienol enriched diet prevented colorectal cancer.
